How to make your bedroom reflect YOU

Does your bedroom speak to your personal style? Or is it just filled with stuff you happen to own? If the latter, it might be time to give your bedroom some TLC

“Bedrooms are usually the last place in the home people pay attention to,” says IKEA Australia Interior Design leader Christine Gough.

“But it goes back to mental wellbeing, the aspect of a space you can retreat to – a safe space, a cocoon space, that you can call your own and have that privacy.”

In Lindfield, NSW, makeup artist and mother Lara, wanted a bedroom that reflected her personality and passions.

Here, Christine shares how IKEA solved Lara’s bedroom issues.

Learn from Lara’s story how you can inject a bit more of you into your bedroom.

1. Put your possessions on display

Are your collectibles stashed away in a wardrobe somewhere, or on display in your bedroom?

First up, all your travel souvenirs and special possessions can actually do wonders towards giving your room some personality, if presented in the right way.

“We all have things we collect, often buried in the bedroom,” says Christine.

“It’s really those details and loved things that tell your story. So it’s about getting them out and on display.”

2. Consider wall shelving or a gallery wall

What’s the best way to feature personal items?

For Lara, the task seemed overwhelming.

“By using colour, texture and Lara’s personal objects, we were able to detail her collections and display her favourite things in a way that reflected her style” – Christine.

If your profession is also your passion, why not pay homage to this in your bedroom?

IKEA used MOSSLANDA picture ledges to display her personal photographs and favourite make-up books.

“We also used a SKÅDIS pegboard system that you can attach baskets, clips and accessories to store things in. And we created a make-up station for her to display some of her everyday make-up.” – Christine

Feeling inspired? The SKÅDIS pegboard combos start at just $25, so it’s a small upfront investment to start experimenting with your own new look.

3. Reconfigure your wardrobe

IKEA also worked with Lara on her wardrobe. While she had a built-in robe, the configurations weren’t ideal.

“We used the modular PLATSA storage system so you can create any configuration you want. It’s a very affordable way to reconfigure a wardrobe that’s not working for you,” explains Christine.

4. Focus on your bed

With your bed being the spot you’re likely to spend most of your time in, it’s an area you’ll definitely want to concentrate on.

Refreshing your textiles is an easy way to uplift a tired bedroom.

Lara wanted a bed that resembled a retreat; a light look and feel with lots of texture using breathable soft cotton.

“I think a lot of the time we forget how easy it is to change a look with textiles rather than doing a complete make-over of the bedroom,” says Christine.

IKEA used the LAUVIK divan bed with its soft cushioned headboard so Lara could sit up and read comfortably.

5. Create zones

And finally, IKEA worked with Lara on zoning her bedroom to create balanced spaces. “Lara had a large room that didn’t flow, so we worked with her to create zones within her space” says Christine.

“We created a reading corner which is something Lara really wanted. Equipped with lighting, it gives Lara the option to dim up or down dependant on her mood or activity,” Christine says.

“What you love really comes down to what you will include and display in your space. There’s no right or wrong when you look at it from that perspective. For Lara, it was family, fashion and makeup.”
